Shropshire FA Men's Futsal LeagueThis is a featured page

The Shropshire FA Men's Futsal League has been run a total of 4 times so far, with the competition held once at the TCAT Sports Dome and on 3 occasions at the Shrewsbury Sports Village. On the first occasion the league was won by Wrekin (not associated with Wrekin Futsal), the second and third leagues were won by Sporting Shropshire and the fourth league was won by Futsalopians.

On the last three occasions the Shropshire FA have nominated the winners of the Shropshire FA Futsal League to progress onto qualifying for the National Futsal Finals. In 2006, Sporting Shropshire managed to get through the regional qualifying tournament to take their place in Sheffield, where they were relying on their star player, James Watkins, who scored 59 goals in 10 games in the Shropshire League. Sporting Shropshire were placed into a very difficult group along with Kickers, Ravenous Taverners and Salford Victoria. They lost 7-0 against Kickers, 5-2 against Rav Tav and 6-8 against Salford Victoria, unfortunately they ended up with no points, but still progressed to the 'Plate' competition where they lost 8-7 to Norwich Union.

In 2007, Sporting Shropshire won the Shropshire League again, to progress into a regional qualifier. Unofrtunately, with only a win needed in their final game against Chippenham, they succumed to defeat. Chippenham ended up going on to win the 'Plate' competition at the National Finals and their star player, Luke Ballinger, has gone on to play for England and is widely considered to be a top prospect.

In 2008 it was the turn of Futsalopians to win the Shropshire Futsal league and progress onto the regional qualifiers. They came up against Thorplands United from Northamptonshire, losing 4-2 and the University of Worcester, again losing 4-2. They acquitted themselves very well and I am sure they will be keen to win the league again next year and hopefully go one step further and qualify for the national finals.

Since winning the Shropshire FA Futsal League in 2007, Sporting Shropshire have now pushed forward with Futsal and have re-named to TNS Futsal and now compete regularly in the Regional Futsal Leagues Midland Conference.

2008 saw the emergence of 3 new teams and another team with a change of name. Wrekin Futsal, Red Lion Rangers and No Hopers were new to the league and FC Hodnet were previously known as Market Drayton Tigers. The overall standard of Futsal in Shropshire has improved in the last 12 months, with the league title only decided on the last evening of action and any one of three teams in a position to win the league on the last evening.

Hopefully 2009 will see the Shropshire FA Futsal League continue to go from strength to strength and Shropshire can once again have a side at the National Finals.
